Gerwyn Price gets ‘big boost’ hours before facing Luke Littler in Premier League | Other | Sport
Gerwyn Price has been a major boost heading into Thursday night’s Premier League clash against Luke Littler. The Welshman has been in imperious form this year and already boasts two nightly wins to his name.
Having had his inclusion in the 2025 Premier League criticised at the time, Price has worked hard to silence the doubters and currently sits third in the standings. But as well as his impressive big-stage performances, Price has also been performing on the floor too.
That was the case on Wednesday afternoon as the 2021 world champion won his second Players Championship title of the year, beating Josh Rock in a nail-biting 8-7 final. Defeating the likes of Ian White, Jonny Clayton and world No.13 Rock en route, Price said afterwards: “Josh played fantastic darts to come back, but luckily I got a big lead otherwise, he would have blown me away.
“I didn’t perform that well on the outside boards today, but I played really well on the streaming boards. I felt a little bit more comfortable and just seemed to zone in, and this will give me a boost going into the Premier League tomorrow. It doesn’t matter how well you’re playing, when you’re winning tournaments, it gives you great confidence going forward.”
It’s not that Price is in particular need of a boost ahead of his clash against Littler in Manchester on Thursday night, given the arrowsmith boasts a stunning record against the reigning world champion. Price is in the midst of a six-game winning streak against Littler – something the teenager is all too aware of.
When asked about his disappointing showings against Price in recent months, Littler replied: “I know he’s obviously got the record and he knows how to beat me but hopefully I can try and get that win over him. I wouldn’t say I’m motivated to obviously beat him, obviously I want to try and beat him, but I won’t go on stage saying to myself ‘you need to win this, you need to win this.”
Littler, preparing for (somewhat of) a homecoming in Manchester, added: I’ll just go up on stage with the same mindset of winning that first game and getting two points on the board… I’m obviously looking to try and go back-to-back in Manchester, but for myself, try and get that fifth nightly win, break the record.
“I know there’s loads of weeks to go, but I want to try and get it done as quick as possible. I just want to try and just keep that six-point gap or even try and extend on it to number two in the table. I think the past however many years, the format’s been this one now, I think 26 has got you in to Finals Night.”
