Glasner claim, Southgate ‘meeting’ – Man Utd’s Amorim replacements | Football | Sport

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is under mounting pressure following a fourth defeat in seven games at the start of the 2025/26 season. Despite easing some of the strain with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford, the loss to Brentford this past weekend has put him back in the spotlight.

Igor Thiago halted any momentum with two rapid goals at Gtech Community Stadium. Benjamin Sesko managed to claw one back before half-time, but United ultimately suffered a 3-1 defeat after Bruno Fernandes‘ missed penalty and a stunning goal from Mathias Jensen in stoppage time. A victory would have seen back-to-back wins secured for the first time under Amorim, but another loss means it is just 34 points from a possible 93 picked up since he arrived. With that being said, Express Sport has taken a look at the latest updates on Amorim’s future and the potential replacements.

Southgate meeting truth

The rumour mill has been in overdrive recently with speculation that former England manager Gareth Southgate could be taking the reins at Manchester United, but according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, this isn’t likely to happen any time soon.

“I had received many questions about the Man United hierarchy about a face-to-face meeting with Gareth Southgate,” he confessed on his YouTube channel.

“I am not aware of any meeting, any direct contact or negotiations. The relationship between the people at INEOS and Gareth Southgate is very good and that is why we have links, but at the moment I am not aware of any proposal or that Man United are going around and telling any managers ‘we want you to be the new boss’.”

Amorim sack update

Despite the ongoing speculation, current manager Ruben Amorim‘s position remains precarious, with his future hanging in the balance if results don’t improve soon. “Man United are still respecting their manager, Ruben Amorim,” Romano has said on his YouTube channel. “They are still waiting to see an improvement and so the situation of Ruben Amorim remains one to watch.

“I am not saying that Amorim is absolutely safe, his job is not absolutely safe in this moment because Man United need to perform in a different way but it does not mean they met with Gareth Southgate or already started the process to appoint him. Let’s wait and see what happens but for sure the next game will be important for Amorim.”

Glasner breaks silence

Oliver Glasner, 51, emerged as the bookmakers’ leading candidate to replace Amorim. Crystal Palace occupy third position in the table and remain unbeaten in the Premier League this season.

The Austrian boss addressed speculation connecting him with United when questioned by the media. He told Kicker: “I follow all the rumours – and that’s all there is – neutrally and completely relaxed.

“Focusing on the daily work with my players and coaches, and trying to enjoy it as much as possible.”
