Golf LIVE – McIlroy faces Masters blow as new Woods details emerge | Golf | Sport

The Masters is less than one week away, as golf fans worldwide eagerly anticipate the first major tournament of 2026. Some 90 players will take to the famed greens and fairways of Augusta National come Thursday, April 9, as they vie for a coveted green jacket.

Rory McIlroy ultimately heads to the tournament as defending champion thanks to his emphatic play-off win over Justin Rose at last year’s instalment, putting to bed an 11-year wait to complete the Career Grand Slam. However, the Northern Irishman will be up against a wealth of stiff competition as he looks to become just the fourth man to achieve back to back victories at the Masters.

One name who will not be involved in the tournament is Phil Mickelson, who announced on Thursday that he had withdrawn from the field as a result of a ‘personal health matter’ affecting his family. Elsewhere, Tiger Woods will not make his long-awaited comeback at Augusta, after he was arrested for driving under the influence last week in Jupiter, Florida.

The 50-year-old flipped his SUV on South Beach Road before he was booked into Martin County Jail for eight hours. Having since been released, Woods has pleaded not guilty to the charges and broke his silence on matters with an online statement.
