Monday morning’s instalment of Good Morning Britain was interrupted for an update on Donald Trump, who has threatened to strike Iran if its regime continues to kill demonstrators. ITV host Kate Garraway began: “US President Donald Trump has upped his tough talk about Iran this morning, saying he is looking at strong options. This is after more than 500 protestors are reported to have been killed in anti-government demonstrations there. Thousands more have been detained.” Correspondent Jay Akbar then explained in further detail to viewers: “In Iran, protestors risk violence or worse, for change. It’s reported that hundreds of them have been killed.”

According to reports, a total of 544 people have been killed since the protests began, and 10,000 people have been arrested.

He added: “They began as demonstrations against inflation, and now against the regime itself, and it’s presented Donald Trump with an opportunity.”

Trump said during a press conference yesterday that his government is “looking at it very seriously”.

One of the more extreme options being considered by Trump is a direct strike on Iran. However, Iran says such an action would force an equally violent reaction on US military bases and its ally, Israel.

However, Trump said Tehran has reached out and “wants to negotiate” in order to prevent any kind of attack.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker said Tehran would consider US and Israeli ships and bases to be “fair targets” if Washington gets involved, which has raised concerns over a wider conflict.
