Grand National 2026 results in full: Where did my horse finish in Aintree race? | Racing | Sport
I Am Maximus, ridden by Paul Townend, wrote his name in the Aintree Festival history books with his second win at the Grand National. The Willie Mullins-trained horse started the race as the clear favourite, with Jagwar and Panic Attack having been just behind in the odds before the Aintree showpiece got underway.
Neither horse ended the race during what turned out to be a chaotic 2026 Grand National, with I Am Maximus coming through right at the end to take the win. Townend timed his attack perfectly, with Jordans, ridden by Joseph Patrick O’Brien, having led for most of the run-in.
It’s a return to the winners’ circle for I Am Maximus, who finished second in last year’s National, having won the race the year before. An emotional Townend struggled to get his words out as he spoke of what the J.P. McManus-owned horse meant to him.
Speaking to ITV Sport, Townend, who has completed the Gold Cup and Grand National double now this season, said: “He’s tough isn’t he? He still didn’t travel with the enthusiasm of the first year but the cheekpieces helped in the middle of the race. He’s a really, really good horse, that’s why. He wasn’t telling me not to ride him. He’s so good. He’s got such an engine and will gallop to the end of the world for you.”
Several of the horses that pulled up were assessed for injuries after the finish, while jockey Robbie Dunne was taken to hospital following a nasty fall.
