Groundhog Day 2026 LIVE: Punxsutawney Phil gives verdict | World | News

Punxsutawney Phil has made yet another Groundhog Day appearance today, as thousands descended on a small Pennsylvania town. Tradition says that, if the famous groundhog sees his shadow and returns to his hole, people should expect six more weeks of winter. However, if he doesn’t see his shadow, this is a sign of spring and he will stay above ground. The festivities are held on Gobbler’s Knob – a small hill and stage about two miles southeast of the small borough of Punxsutawney.

While the event, celebrated across much of North America, kicked off before dawn, the real celebrations began when Phil came out of his hole – at around 6am local time, after the sun started to show. Last year he predicted six more weeks of winter, but experts say the groundhog isn’t always accurate. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says he’s correct only 30% of the time, based on his predictions from 2015 to 2024.
