Gunman with ‘bomb attached to leg’ shoots 9-year-old girl | World | News

A man has died and a child has been injured following a shooting incident at a shopping centre in Ireland this evening.

It is understood that a nine-year-old girl was shot in the leg and some reports indicated the shooter, a white Irish male, had what police feared was explosives attached to his leg, at the Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow at around 6.15pm.

It’s undetermined at this time as to how the girls injuries were sustained.

The lone gunman appeared to have fired a number of shots in the Tesco supermarket before turning the weapon on himself. It appears the fatal shot was self-inflicted.

The little girl suffered a leg injury during the terrifying incident, the Gardai told the Express she received treatment from paramedics but did not require hospital care.

Emergency services raced to the scene and the site was evacuated.

A large cordon has been put in place around the shopping Centre in Carlow town which will remain in place overnight.

Videos on social media show people shoppers fleeing in panic as gunshots can be heard in the background.

The body of the man remains at the scene, the Gardai have called in The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to examine his body.

It is understood that the Gardai suspect the device the dead man was carrying, could be explosive or flammable. Its status must be checked before the area can be declared safe.

Although video footage is circulating on social media the Gardai has issued a statement urging people not to share videos, including on messaging apps.

The latest Gardaii statement reads: “Shortly after 6:15pm, Gardaí were alerted following reports of a firearm discharge at Fairgreen Shopping Centre, Carlow.

“An Garda Síochána are currently at the scene, with the shopping centre and car park cordoned off. The cordon will remain in place overnight.

“A white Irish adult male is deceased at the scene.

“The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been requested to attend.

“A female juvenile received treatment from paramedics following the incident but did not require hospital care. It’s undetermined at this time as to how those injuries were sustained.
