A ‘heart-pounding’ new thriller from Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow is coming to Netflix this month.
With a stellar cast featuring stars like Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson and Greta Lee, the movie has already impressed critics and scooped an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score.
A House of Dynamite tells the story of a single, unattributed missile launched at the United States, which triggers a race to determine who is responsible and how to respond.
Other cast members include Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Jonah Hauer-King, Moses Ingram, Jason Clarke, Malachi Beasley, Brian Tee and Brittany O’Grady.
Gbenga Akinnagbe, Willa Fitzgerald, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Kyle Allen, and Kaitlyn Dever are also in the movie.
In theatres now, A House of Dynamite is the latest from Bigelow, who became the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Director in 2009 for The Hurt Locker.
She has also helmed Zero Dark Thirty, Point Break, Detroit, and The Weight of Water. It is written by Noah Oppenheim, who is known for Zero Day and Jackie, and is also a former president of NBC News. Bigelow told Deadline that it was his journalistic background that led to her reaching out to him to write the script.
Discussing the experience of filming the movie, Ferguson told Netflix’s Tudum Magazine: “The thing you know about a Kathryn Bigelow film is that everything will be impactful. You are a part of a journey that is impactful. The whole experience of how she films, that is the thrill. The process of being in her environment – that’s exciting.”
One critic on Rotten Tomatoes called the movie a “heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat political thriller”, while another said it “grips” and “terrifies” viewers.
Meanwhile, the movie has an impressive 7.3 rating on IMDb, with one viewer writing: “Superbly written, acted, shot, and edited, the film shines in every department, complete with a fittingly thrilling score. Its narrative is ingeniously crafted to build tension and truly put you in the shoes of the characters.”
Another said: “A House of Dynamite is an excellent film – tightly directed, smartly written, and packed with both tension and emotional weight. The story unfolds with gripping pace, blending action with character-driven drama in a way that feels both fresh and grounded.”
A third said it was a “must-see”, adding: “Not only is this a film for our times, it’s probably a film for all times, highlighting the futility of armed conflict and the desperate need for us to change tack on how we live with each other on this planet.”
A House of Dynamite is in select theatres now and will be released on Netflix on Friday (October 24).
