Heartbreak as family-run hobby shop announces shock closure – after 56 years | World | News
After more than half a century, Model Empire, a family-run hobby shop is closing its doors, leaving generations of customers nostalgic and heartbroken. The store, which opened in 1970 and became a go-to destination for model trains, planes, and especially automobiles, will shut in the first quarter of 2026.
Owned by Alex Geiger, who took over from his mother in 1983, Model Empire has been a cornerstone of the hobby industry in Wisconsin, US, for 56 years. “This is what we’ve done all these years, so it’s going to be a major change,” Mr Geiger said. For Alex, the shop has been more than a business – it has been a second home, both for him and his loyal customers.
The closure is not due to financial difficulties. In fact, the store saw strong sales, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, Alex and his wife Roberta Geiger, his high school sweetheart, say the decision comes from a desire to step back, spend more time with family and grandchildren, and enjoy a slower pace of life.
In a statement on Facebook, the couple thanked their customers. They said: “Our success as a business wouldn’t have been possible without all our customers. The time has come when we would like to take a step back and enjoy a bit more time with our family and grandkids as we semi-retire. The hobby industry has changed a lot over the last decade or so and we believe that this is the best decision for us.”
The shop will hold liquidation sales for its extensive inventory, including items stored in multiple warehouses, before transitioning to online sales only.

Alex joked that the process of selling off stock will be gradual: “I wish I could tell you there was a point, because I don’t think we’re going to be that aggressive on selling.”
Customers have shared their sadness online, with one writing: “I always knew this unfortunate day was coming. I started buying there in 1986… and after I moved further away I’d stop by and spend $100–150 just for old times’ sake!” Another added: “I’ve been going there since I was a little kid, loved getting your catalogue in the mail.
“But I understand, and wish you guys well in semi-retirement!”
For the Geigers, the closure marks the end of an era, but they will continue to be involved in the hobby world through online sales and shows.
The shop will remain open for just one more month, giving hobbyists a final chance to visit the walls of kits, rare collectibles, and model cars that have defined the West Allis community for decades.
