Helmut Marko confirms decision on returning to F1 after ‘interesting requests’ emerge | F1 | Sport

Helmut Marko has confirmed that he has no plans to return to the F1 paddock in the future after quitting Red Bull. The 82-year-old, however, did confess that he has received some “interesting requests and conversations” related to the motorsport world.

Marko announced his surprise retirement from F1 after watching Max Verstappen narrowly miss out on securing a fifth consecutive Drivers’ Championship title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2025. The Austrian had been ever-present in the Red Bull garage since the team’s entry into the World Championship in 2005.

Giving an update on his retirement, Marko told ORF: “I’m not completely involved anymore, but I’m up to speed. The nice thing is that I don’t feel any pressure, so I don’t lie awake with thoughts like, ‘What if the engine doesn’t work, or something else doesn’t?’ and so on.”

“I don’t have that direct responsibility anymore. Of course, I am interested in getting the best possible result for Red Bull, but the situation is much more relaxed now.“

Marko also made it clear that he would not be coming out of retirement to join another F1 team or a different motorsport project. “Yes, it is 100 per cent out of the question that I will return to Formula One,” he continued.

“I have had very obscure and interesting requests and conversations at times. But I have become successful in F1 with Red Bull, and that should continue. Nothing else will take its place.”

Then there is the Red Bull Powertrains venture, which, in collaboration with American auto giant Ford, has produced in-house, bespoke power units for the 2026 technical regulations. Whether or not they will be competitive with experienced rivals Mercedes and Ferrari will become clear in Melbourne in March.

“There is a lot of unknown, there are big changes in the engine, in the car,” Verstappen confessed at Red Bull’s car launch event in Detroit. “Initially, I’ll take time to adjust during test days. But the motivation is very high.

“It always takes a bit of time to get used to things… You need to understand where the most performance is to be found, get comfortable in the car. Also, with the new engine now as well, that will take a bit of time.”
