How to wash laundry as people make detergent mistake

We all want our laundry to smell lovely, but sometimes it doesn’t go to plan.

There’s nothing more irritating than your towels coming out the washing machine with that weird, damp smell which puts us off so often. And now you don’t have to put up with it any longer.

According to an expert, a bottle of cheap vodka could put a stop to it almost immediately. Booze could be the long-awaited answer to keeping your towels odour-free – and the best bit? The cheaper the vodka, the better.

A TikTok video by Twisselman Trading Co. demonstrated the unconventional yet effective method. The caption explains: “Vodka is a simple choice because it is high in alcohol content and it is odourless and colourless.”

Sounds worth giving a whirl for sweet-smelling garments.

Jennifer Shaw, an expert at Plumbworld, revealed how the method works. She said: “Vodka is a great disinfectant.

“It’s known for its ability to kill bacteria and neutralise odours, which is why it’s effective in eliminating musty smells from towels. The process is simple.

“Just add a small amount of vodka – about a cup – directly into the washing machine along with your regular detergent. The alcohol evaporates during the washing and drying process, leaving no residue or smell behind.”

Jennifer also assured that using vodka in your wash won’t damage your towels or your washing machine, adding: “The washing process gets rid of the alcohol so there’s no need to worry. Sometimes the best solutions are the ones you least expect.”

Jennifer also offered some other nifty laundry tricks to help people make the most of their washing. Some of her top tips are super simple.

  • Use baking soda – This is another excellent addition to your laundry routine. It helps to soften water, which in turn enhances the effectiveness of your detergent. Plus, it can brighten whites and remove odours.
  • Hydrogen peroxide – For those dealing with particularly stubborn stains, Jennifer recommends hydrogen peroxide. It’s a mild bleach and disinfectant. It’s fantastic for removing stains from white towels without the harshness of chlorine bleach.
  • Make sure your laundry is fully dry – Always ensure your laundry is thoroughly dried before storing it. Any remaining moisture can lead to mildew and musty smells. If possible, hang clothes outside to dry in the sun – the UV rays act as a natural disinfectant.
