Winning the lottery is something many people wish they could experience, dreaming about what big purchase they would make. For this Belgian man, that dream became a reality. He won a whopping 52 million euros (equivalent to over £44 million) in the EuroMillions after he bought the lottery ticket and let the system choose the numbers for him in a lucky dip. Despite playing the lottery for decacdes, he took a chance by doing it the random way for the first time and it looked like it worked in his favour.
Many might be wondering what the man plans to do with the impressive amount of money, and indeed he revealed the first thing he will do with his money. Unlike most people who might first plan to retire, travel or purchase property, this lucky winner has taken a much more simple approach to things. “It may seem crazy, but the first thing I want to do is buymyself a few new shirts,” he says.
The man does have plans to do all the things you’d expect later on in life. He does have plans to retire later, invest in real estate, helping his loved ones, and taking a trip to the Canary Islands. However, first things first for the winner is new shirts.
The winning ticket was purchased at Veerle De Block’s bookshop in a village called Sint-Pauwels. The owner said: “As a newsagent, you always dream of seeing one of your customers win such a sum one day, but it’s unreal.”
When realised his win was over 2,000 euros (£1714), he quickly contacted the National Lottery as the standard procedure for larger wins. However, was surprised to find out just how much he won.
Patricia Pen from Belgium’s National Lottery described the shock the winner experienced when he realised he won the eye-watering amount.
She said: “He has spent some sleepless nights, but remains calm and modest. He is the typical winner profile: discreet, dreamy and down-to-earth.”
And indeed, the winner’s first thought being to buy some new shirts seems to fit that description perfectly.
