Iconic UK garden centre with ice rink to close after 50 years – ‘so sad’
Woburn Sands Garden Centre has announced its closure after 50 years of operation, marking the end of a beloved local treasure. The beloved garden centre is offering closing-down sales until February 28, with remaining stock available for a 20% discount.
The centre confirmed that it will be shutting up shop for good after a difficult few years. It stated in a recent Facebook post that “recent Government policies have made it nearly impossible for businesses to survive. This has resulted in continuous financial losses, decreased customer spending, rising costs, and increased tax pressure, making the business no longer viable.”
Woburn Sands, located in Milton Keynes, was founded in 1949 by Harvey Frost. It has evolved into an independent garden centre and, in addition to its plants, the centre features restaurants, a soft play area, and seasonal events like Santa’s Grotto, an ice rink, and craft fairs.
It appealed to many young families for its wide range of activities and shopping options, bringing a more modern twist to a typical garden centre.
The business posted about its shutdown on Facebook, along with a heartfelt message thanking customers and staff for their support over the many years.
It said: “This is not the outcome we wanted, but it is the difficult reality we now face.”
The post attracted comments from several upset customers. One user wrote: “We are really sad and sorry to hear this news, for we always liked visiting the garden centre for its excellent plants and service. Also visiting the works and the Edinburgh Wool Shop. This garden centre will be sadly missed in the area.”
Another long-time shopper added: “So sad to read this. I’ve been going to that site all my life, and I’m 63! I remember Mr Austin and his small greenhouse.”
