‘I’ll work with Klopp – Liverpool would want return if Slot is sacked’ | Football | Sport

Liverpool would “love” to welcome Jurgen Klopp back if Arne Slot were to depart. This is according to former Reds striker John Aldridge, who has suggested the German could make a dramatic comeback should Slot leave Anfield at the end of the season. Klopp dedicated eight-and-a-half years to Liverpool before his exit in May 2024. During his tenure with the Reds, the former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund boss won eight trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

He amassed an impressive 60.9 per cent victory rate on Merseyside, securing 299 wins and 109 draws from his 491 matches at the helm. Following his departure from Liverpool, Klopp took a brief hiatus before resuming duties as the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull in January 2025.

He has held this position for the last 14 months, with Klopp guiding the strategic vision and growth of the entire Red Bull network, encompassing RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, New York Red Bulls, and Red Bull Bragantino.

Slot, meanwhile, succeeded Klopp at Liverpool and secured the Premier League title in his debut season of 2024/25. Yet despite investing over £400million on fresh recruits last summer, the Reds have encountered greater difficulties this term.

Slot’s team currently occupy sixth position in the division, 19 points adrift of leaders Arsenal and battling to secure a Champions League place for next season.

Speculation has emerged that Slot could be under pressure if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League or claim silverware before the campaign concludes, with the Reds remaining active in Europe’s premier club competition and the FA Cup.

Aldridge, who made 103 appearances for the Reds while netting 63 goals, has acknowledged he would embrace Klopp’s return wholeheartedly should the club opt to dismiss Slot.

Speaking to BOYLE Sports, Aldridge said: “We’ve got a massive charity game at Anfield in a week and a half’s time and I’m on the staff with Jurgen Klopp, so I’m going to ask him!

“I think we’ve moved on from Jurgen, but we’d love him back if Arne Slot were to go, obviously you would, because what he did for us, the passion he brought to the team, the club, and the fans was Bill Shankly-esque.

“If Arne Slot were to go, we’d love him to come back. But it doesn’t work like that, does it? If he wanted to go to Real Madrid, then good luck to him. Good luck to him, as long as when he plays against Liverpool in the Champions League in years to come, I’d want him to play his reserves!”

Aldridge and Klopp are scheduled to collaborate in a Liverpool FC Legends match against Borussia Dortmund later this month, with former Reds midfielder Steven Gerrard among the other stars participating.
