‘I’m a dog trainer and there are 3 breeds I would never personally own’
Garret Wing of DIYK9, online dog training courses, shared his top three breeds he would never consider owning. “Starting with number one,” Garret began. “The Central Asian Shepherd, also known as Alabay.”
Garret said: “The males can get over 170-plus pounds and they’re great livestock guardians; problem is, I don’t have any livestock.”
The American Kennel Club pointed out that the Alabay breed is “not for first-time dog owners”. In fact, this type of dog has a “natural instinct of territory” and is fearless towards large predators.
Another dog breed Garret is wary of is the Bloodhound, but not for the reason you might be thinking. “The males can get up to 100lbs,” said Garret. “But it’s not the size that concerns me.”
He explained: “I don’t care how many baths you give them, they just have a smell about them that’s hard to get rid of.”
The American Kennel Club added that Bloodhounds are “droolers”, so they’re not for people who like a spotless home.
The third dog breed Garret would not own, which may offend some pet owners in the UK, is the Chihuahua.
Garret described a Chihuahua as a “three-pound demon from the underworld” that is notoriously nippy.
He said that if he wanted a Chihuahua that “served no other purpose than to sit on my lap and bite anything that comes within three feet range of me”, then he’d consider it.
But, for now, “it’ll be a hard pass on that [dog breed] for me”, Garret decided, which may upset some people who have Chihuahuas at home.
As for the American Kennel Club, the organisation did note that the Chihuahua has a “terrier-like demeanor” and can end up ruling the house without adequate training.
Three dogs to avoid, according to the dog trainer
- Alabay
- Bloodhound
- Chihuahua
While Garret doesn’t recommend these dog breeds, there may be plenty of dog owners who will refute what he says.
