I’m a professional cleaner – these are 6 things you must clean every Saturday
Some household cleaning tasks can fill us with dread whenever we pluck up the courage to get around to them. And, oftentimes, these are important chores to help keep your home clean and fresh which you can feel the benefit of immediately after completing them.
Experts have pinpointed six vital areas of spring cleaning which need to become part of your weekly routine to keep your home in tip-top shape.
It might mean binging one or two Netflix episodes less on a Saturday, but Danielle Moore, founder of the A Little Moore Clean commercial cleaning company notes which areas to target and how to do so.
The mother-of-three and former police detective prides herself on a running clean, organised and dust-free home and business, and here’s how she does it.
Bedding
Danielle’s first tip is to avoid making a habit of going too long between bedding washes. Instead, every Saturday, strip your bed.
“This is one of my priorities, as bedding collects sweat, skin cells, and dust mites,” Moore explains.
“Washing your bedding weekly maintains hygiene, improves sleep quality, and helps your bedding last longer with the proper upkeep.”
Frequently touched surfaces
Each week you should set aside time to clean and disinfect any frequently touched surfaces around the home, per A Little Moore Clean.
This might include light switches, doorknobs, drawer handles, bannisters, remote controls, keyboards, and phones.
Moore insists: “These areas and items spread germs quickly, as they harbour bacteria, oil and dirt, yet they are cleaned the least.”
Bins
Don’t just empty your bins at the end of the week, clean them out, too. Washing the inside and outside of the bin itself with a microfiber cloth and some dish soap key.
“Although we use bin liners, bins still seem to get pretty grimy and hold a smell after the trash has been removed,” Danielle says.
Bathrooms
For this task, Steve Evans, the owner of professional cleaners, Memphis Maids, recommends taking on a few jobs in particular.
To start, you will want to clean your bathroom mirror, Evans recommends a one-to-one water and vinegar solution or a commercial glass cleaner for the job.
Then, scrub the shower walls which can be done with the same water and vinegar solution on the tile before rinsing off with hot water, or you can opt for a foam cleaner instead.
Last but not least, be sure to clean your toilet, addressing the outside and rim, too, Evans adds.
Basic areas in the kitchen
Kitchen cleaning usually takes less time than initially expected, Evans recommends wiping down cleaning appliances, your hob and your microwave as well as the inside of the fridge to keep your shelves and drawers looking fresh.
Be sure to clean out any expired food, too.
Floors
Make an effort to vacuum and mop the floors in your home every Saturday.
Evans adds: “I feel like cleaning your floors helps you ‘reset’ your home and causes the biggest impact.”
Make sure to save this task for last to avoid getting your sparkling floors dirty once again by walking through the house, carrying out the other chores.
By tackling these areas each Saturday, you create a healthier, more pleasant environment that’s easier to maintain throughout the week.
