‘I’m a skincare expert – here are five must-have ingredients for healthy skin all winter’


Skin can quickly become dull and dry during the winter months due to cold weather, but there are ingredients you can use in skincare products to help revive your skin.

Hayley Walker, skincare expert at Justmylook, said: “Autumn and winter can be challenging for our skin. Dryness, irritation and dullness can all take their toll.

“By including a few skincare ingredients in your beauty routine and perfecting it, you can keep your complexion glowing and healthy no matter how chilly it gets.

“As temperatures drop, consider switching to richer, more hydrating products to counteract the drying effects of cold weather and indoor heating.

“Using a hydrating serum followed by a moisturiser to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier against the elements.”

1. Hyaluronic acid

With the air turning colder and drier, parched skin can benefit from hyaluronic acid which is “like a tall glass of water for your skin”.

It attracts and retains moisture, and comes in the form of serums, cleansers or even moisturisers.

2. Ceramides

The expert explained: “Ceramides are like the building blocks of your skin’s barrier. When the weather gets harsh and indoor heating dries out the air, ceramides help maintain your skin’s natural defence system.

“They lock in moisture and keep out irritants, ensuring your skin stays smooth and resilient.” Incorporate ceramides in the form of rich creams or serums.

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a staple when it comes to wanting to brighten up your complexion, helping to add a natural glow and reducing pigmentation.

According to the expert, a Vitamin C serum can keep your skin “looking radiant” even on the cloudiest of days.

4. Retinol

The skincare pro continued: “Autumn and winter are ideal times to use retinol. This Vitamin A derivative boosts cell turnover and collagen production, smoothing out fine lines and giving your skin a fresh, youthful look.

“Since retinol increases sun sensitivity, using it in the cooler months helps you avoid the harsh effects of summer UV rays. Start with a lower concentration and gradually increase it to let your skin adjust.”

5. Niacinamide

Niacinamide, or Vitamin B3, is a “super skincare ingredient”, and it helps to soothe inflammation, improve texture and boost hydration.

If your skin is feeling irritated or uneven due to the shift in weather, niacinamide can help to restore its balance.

It comes in the form of serums or moisturisers and there are so many variations of it on the market.

The expert also recommended incorporating peptides, which help to rebuild and repair the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin.
