‘I’m a vet – there are dogs I’d have as a first-time owner’

When it comes to owning a dog for the first time, many owners-to-be might sit and wonder what breed they should go for.

According to a team of vets, some breeds are better suited than others for those with little to no experience with pet ownership.

In a TikTok video, the team at Santa Monica Veterinary Group said: “If you’re looking to adopt or get a new furry addition to your family, here are some dog breeds our team at the clinic recommends.”

In the clip, a vet is seen approaching other members of their team asking them what breeds they’d recommend for first-time owners.

In response to the question, the first vet says: “I usually say mixed breed dogs because hopefully, you get the best of two, or four, or six, or eight different worlds.”Another vet says she would recommend a Toy Poodle, while another said Pit Bull. He added: “People judge them but they’re very loving and good family dogs.”

One more said: “I’d say a Shih Tzu because my mum had a Shih Tzu and it kept her company and slept with her every night. They got through their health issues together.” Finally, the last vet said she would go for a Chihuahua because they “live forever”.

Commenting on the video, one user said: “Definitely not Dachshund.” Another user added: “I adopted a Pitty Mix and he’s stuck to me like glue. Literally cheek to cheek right now as he sleeps.” A third user said: “Japanese Chin.”
