Newcastle United’s Dan Burn has provided an update on the severe injury he sustained during last month’s 1-0 derby loss to Sunderland, insisting it is the worst pain he has ever felt. Burn has been absent from the Magpies’ last eight fixtures after fracturing a rib and puncturing a lung in a clash with Black Cats defender Nordi Mukiele.

The 33-year-old was present at St James’ Park for Newcastle‘s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday night, where he spoke to Sky Sports before the match. He disclosed that his lung has healed but his rib will need a few more weeks, hinting that the Champions League fixture against PSG could mark his return to the pitch. “I am good,” Burn informed Sky Sports. “My lung is all right, the rib will be a couple more weeks but I am feeling a lot better than I was a few weeks ago. It is the most pain I have ever been in and I was lying in bed for about three days but it got better pretty quickly.

When questioned about his readiness to return, Burn simply responded: “Yes.” Newcastle are currently grappling with a defensive injury crisis, with Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, and Burn all sidelined, leaving them with just four fit senior defenders available.

Teenage midfielder Lewis Miley has eased some of this pressure by performing admirably in a makeshift right-back position, but any additional injuries to their defenders would place significant strain on the squad.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has revealed the club are hoping for Dan Burn’s swift return to fitness, whilst also suggesting the Magpies could dip into the transfer market if additional defensive cover is required.

“Defensively, we’re really stretched,” Howe admitted following their defeat to Manchester City.

“We’re pinning our hopes on Dan being back pretty soon. Dan Burn, that would give us a massive lift, and of course the transfer market is still available to us.”

Howe could potentially recall Matt Targett from his loan stint at Middlesbrough as one solution. Meanwhile, confirmation has emerged that Tino Livramento faces approximately eight weeks out with a hamstring problem, ruling him out until March.

Fabian Schar is expected to return before the campaign concludes following ankle ligament damage, though he may be sidelined for up to three months. Jamaal Lascelles appears destined for a departure during the current window.
