Iran taunts Trump with video of ‘aircraft carrier attack’ after spurning US’s peace plan | World | News
Iranian state media has released a video it says shows cruise missiles targeting the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier. Press TV reported on Wednesday (March 25) that the US warship was forced to change course after land-to-sea missiles were launched to “assert” the Islamic Republic‘s “maritime sovereignty” and to counter threats from the United States‘ “hostile fleet”.
It has not been possible to independently verify the footage, which appears to show missiles being fired into the night sky as a man off camera yells, “Allahu Akbar”, which translates as either “God is greater” or “God is the Greatest”.
Iranian state broadcaster, Press TV, reported that a senior official announced Iran would end the war when it decided to and when its conditions are met.
US officials said the aircraft carrier wasn’t damaged, continued to fully operate and carry out its role in the Sea of Oman, The Sun reports.
Iranian Rear Admiral Shahram Irani said the “hostile” US carrier group would be targeted with “crushing strikes” if it came within range of Iran’s missile systems, according to a Press TV report.
Washington had shared a 15-point plan, which Pakistani officials described as proposing sanctions relief, the rolling back of Iran’s nuclear programme, limits on missiles and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran issued its own plan via state TV. It includes a halt to the killing of its officials, ways of making sure no other war is waged against it, reparations for the conflict, the end of hostilities and Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, told state TV: “No negotiations have happened with the enemy until now, and we do not plan on any negotiations.”
White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, refused to provide details of the US plan on Wednesday, but said the talks are ongoing.
She said more strikes could come if talks were not successful and that US forces were “very close” to meeting “core objectives”.
To date, the death toll from the war is more than 1,500 people killed in Iran, nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, 16 in Israel and 13 US military members, as well as a number of civilians in the Gulf region. Millions of people in Lebanon and Iran have been displaced.
