Israel kills ‘Hamas’ Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al Sharif | World | News
Israel claims it has eliminated a journalist from Al Jazeera, alleging he was commanding a Hamas cell.
Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, who provided extensive coverage from northern Gaza for the Doha-based network, is believed to have been killed in a deliberate strike, according to the director of the al-Shifa hospital.
Israel released a statement confirming its military had eliminated al-Sharif, alleging he commanded a Hamas cell. In this capacity, they claimed he was responsible for “advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and troops.” This development follows Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that the Jewish State would send ground forces to the entirety of the Gaza Strip.
They also assert they possess “unequivocal proof” of al-Sharif ‘s participation.
Israeli bombs
The 28 year old reporter was inside a tent designated for journalists outside the hospital’s main entrance when it was struck, resulting in his death along with three colleagues.
He also posted footage capturing the sound of Israeli bombs hammering the besieged city from afar.
Mohammed Qreiqeh, another correspondent, and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal also perished in the attack.
In his final Twitter post, shared moments before his death, al-Sharif documented that Gaza City was enduring intense bombardment through concentrated strikes, referred to as “fire belts”, reports the Mirror.
Two months to evacuate
This incident occurs just days after Israel issued a warning to Palestinians in Gaza City that they have fewer than two months to evacuate before it initiates a comprehensive military occupation. Israel‘s security cabinet has given the green light to a contentious plan that sets an October 7 deadline for a million people to evacuate before troops move in, aiming to re-occupy Gaza.
The UN has voiced grave concerns, labelling Israel‘s intentions “deeply alarming” with potential for “catastrophic consequences”.
The evacuation date coincides with the two-year mark of the Hamas massacre that ignited the war in 2023. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration claims the strategy is one of liberation, mandating residents to relocate southward before launching their offensive.
Speaking to Fox News on Thursday, Netanyahu asserted: “We intend to, in order to ensure our security, remove Hamas there, and to pass it to civilian governance that is not Hamas and not anyone advocating the destruction of Israel. We want to liberate ourselves and liberate the people of Gaza from the awful terror of Hamas.”
