Jake Paul immediately suspended from boxing after Anthony Joshua KO | Boxing | Sport
Jake Paul is set to face a brief suspension from the world of boxing after suffering a knockout loss to Anthony Joshua. The pair of pugilists went toe-to-toe in an eight-round professional boxing bout at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
However, AJ needed just six of the scheduled three-minute rounds to get the job done. It was a lacklustre state of affairs on Paul’s part, who spent the majority of his night backpeddling his way to fatigue, depending on clinches to stop the punishing power of Joshua. However, as the fight ticked on, the ‘Problem Child’ faced issues with his own, visibly exhausted as a result of draining his cardio.
After suffering a knockdown in the fifth and another two in the sixth, then came another knockdown from Joshua, who left his opponent in a pile by the ropes failing to make the referee’s count as the contest was called. And as a result of the fashion of his loss, Paul could now be set to spend around two months away from the sport.
As the bout was sanctioned by the Florida State Athletic Commission, both Paul and Joshua were set to see a minimum of a seven-day suspension regardless of the outcome of the fight in the interest of fighter safety. However, due to Paul being knocked out, he will now likely see a minimum of a 45 day suspension from the sport, which could even be extended to 60 or 90 days depending on the outcome of a doctor’s assessment.
This is in line with the rules laid out by the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports. Joshua’s suspension could also be dropped as a result of taking little damage, although it’s not likely to be the case for Paul, who also feared that he had broken his jaw during the action.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani in the ring, Paul said: “Man, I’ve already won in every single way in life. My family, my beautiful fiancee Jutta. This sport has helped me so much in my life. I think my jaw is broken by the way…yeah, it’s definitely broke. But man, that was good. Nice little a** whooping from one of the best to ever do it. I love this s*** and I’m going to come back and get a world championship belt at some point.”
It is also reported that Paul went to hospital after the bout to be checked over. Joshua, meanwhile, was quick to call out Tyson Fury in the wake of his win, telling Helwani: “We shook off the cobwebs and I can’t wait to roll into 2026. If Tyson Fury is as serious as he thinks he is, and he wants to put that on his Twitter fingers, and put on some gloves and come and fight one of the realest fighters out there that will take on any challenge.
“Step in the ring with me next if you’re a real bad boy. Don’t do all that talking, AJ this, AJ that. Let’s see you in the ring and talk with your fists.”
