Young Manchester United talent JJ Gabriel will be eligible for the club’s FA Youth Cup fifth-round tie next week, following the FA’s decision to rescind his red card. The 15-year-old received a straight red card during Tuesday’s 4-3 triumph over West Brom in the U18 Premier League Cup.

The dismissal carried a three-match suspension, which would have sidelined the teenager for the derby against Manchester City, the FA Youth Cup tie with Oxford and a U18s Premier League fixture against Wolves. United submitted an appeal to the FA seeking to overturn the ban, which has now proved successful, with Gabriel cleared for all three matches.

After receiving the red card, Gabriel used social media to challenge the decision.

Posting on Instagram, he shared footage of the incident, which took place immediately following a West Brom goal, and questioned: “How can this be a yellow let alone a red, how?”

Prior to his dismissal, the youngster laid on two assists for his team-mates as United established a 4-0 advantage heading into half-time.

Gabriel is considered a promising prospect at United, and he has been instrumental in the U18s’ FA Youth Cup campaign thus far. He netted the decisive goal in the third-round success against Peterborough in December, a match that marked his Old Trafford debut.

He also featured for 115 minutes during the 2-1 extra-time victory over Derby last month.

Despite his youth, the attacking midfielder has participated in training sessions with United’s senior squad this season. He was involved in the build-up to the Premier League fixture against Tottenham.

United have battled to retain the youngster, with talks at Carrington aimed at convincing him to remain amid approaches from a European powerhouse.
