Joe Root sent message by glamorous presenter after Ashes heroics | Cricket | Sport
Grace Hayden, the daughter of Australian cricket icon Matthew Hayden, has thanked Joe Root for scoring an Ashes century in Australia which meant her dad will not have to walk around the MCG naked. The England star scored a remarkable 138 during the first innings of the second test with both Grace and Matthew understandably relieved following the latter’s bet.
After Greg Blewett omitted Root from his list of best English batters on the basis he had not scored an Ashes away century, Hayden disagreed with his fellow Aussie and subsequently made quite the claim. He said earlier this year: “I’ll talk to you at the end of this summer. I’ll walk nude around the MCG if he doesn’t get a hundred this summer.”
After scoring a total of eight runs in the first innings, it was not looking good for the 54-year-old. However, Root was excellent at the Gabba on Thursday with Grace making her thoughts clear on Instagram. She wrote in a story: “Root thank you, you’ve saved all our eyes [laughing face and cricket bat emojis].”
In the video she also said, “thank god” before posting more follow-up stories showcasing her relief that her dad would not be seen in the nude. Grace is also a sports presenter and was most recently covering the International League T20 tournament in Dubai.
The 23-year-old has been on broadcasts of the Delhi Premier League and Caribbean Premier League in 2025 while also featuring on the Channel Seven cricket coverage Down Under as well. Following her brutal verdict, Hayden also shared his thoughts on Root and how important that display at the crease was for England.
He said on TNT Sports: “That innings was so important for England, when you’re under fire in this country, everyone is on your case. Amonsgt your own thoughts and presence, to be able to come back the way Joe Root has, it just sets you guys up in such great stead.”

He was later dismissed but there was a significant gap between that and England’s next wicket which arrived just after tea when Jofra Archer pinned Jake Weatherald lbw. Later on, Ben Stokes’ excellent delivery was edged by Marnus Labuschagne and caught low down to Smith’s right.
