Jose Mourinho leaves Fenerbahce as Premier League clubs put on red alert | Football | Sport
Jose Mourinho has left his job as Fenerbahce manager a little over 12 months after joining the Turkish outfit. It follows Fenerbahce’s defeat to Benfica in Champions League qualifying, with Mourinho said to have parted ways with the 19-time Turkish champions.
A statement from the club read: “Our Professional Football First Team’s technical director, Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties starting from the 2024-2025 season, has parted ways with us. We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career.”
It opens the door for a return to English football, with Mourinho having already hinted he is in favour of a Premier League remontada. Speaking in October 2024, he said: “Best thing I can do is to go to a team who does not play in Uefa competition. So a club at the bottom in England who needs a coach in two years, I am ready to go. I don’t want to speak any more about it.”
Mourinho had been rumoured as a potential Sean Dyche replacement when Everton were on the hunt for a new boss, but, if the two-time Champions League winner is keen to manage lower down the Premier League table, two options could be on the table.
Firstly, West Ham United, who have endured a torrid start to the season under Graham Potter. The Englishman is one of the favourites to be sacked first this season, meaning the managerial position at the London Stadium could become vacant soon.
Meanwhile, Leeds United were rumoured to be evaluating their manager position following promotion to the top flight, with talk they could sack Daniel Farke before the season had even started. The Yorkshire outfit opted to keep Farke in charge, but all it would take is a bad run of results for the hierarchy to get itchy feet.
Sticking with the United theme, what about a return to Old Trafford? Manchester United aren’t in a UEFA competition this season, and they’ve certainly spent their fair share of time towards the bottom of the table in recent months. There have been whispers that Ruben Amorim could resign from his post, leaving United in the lurch and searching for a new boss.
Finally, Nottingham Forest are another Premier League side to have been linked with a managerial change in the last week. Shock news that Nuno Espirito Santo’s relationship with the Forest bigwigs had broken down surfaced recently, with the coach set for talks with Evangelos Marinakis. It would certainly raise eyebrows if Mourinho rocked up at the City Ground, but who’s to say it wouldn’t be a successful switch?
