‘King’ Trump’s Greenland plans spark Russia’s WW3 warning | World | News
A high-ranking Russian politician claimed Donald Trump’s plans to solidify the US’ national security should be taken seriously – and could have long-lasting consequences on the world order. Alexey Zhuravlev, the deputy of the Russian State Duma, analysed on Wednesday Mr Trump’s latest move on the world stage.
Mentioning the US President’s desire for his country to annex Greenland, a Danish semi-autonomous territory, and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Mr Zhuravlev said Mr Trump isn’t issuing “empty threats”. The close ally of Vladimir Putin said: “I think it should be clear to everyone who observes Trump’s activities: everything he says is not just empty threats.
“And the issue here is not even about the Monroe Doctrine and the US desire to dominate the Western Hemisphere, as it was before.”
The Russian politician went on to suggest that Mr Trump’s plans, which include the US taking over Greenland from a fellow NATO ally, could lead to conflict – possibly involving the whole world.
He said: “Trump is absolutely sure that he is the king of the universe, and everything is permissible for him. This is now the main problem of all humanity, leaders with such an ego and excessive ambitions have often led the planet to catastrophe.
“I wouldn’t be surprised at all if, in the event of a confrontation with the United States, Europe would come to us to kneel at our feet and ask for protection.”
If the US president did decide to seize Greenland by force, which he has repeatedly refused to rule out, it could drag the NATO alliance into conflict.
She told Danish television network TV2: “If the United States decides to militarily attack another NATO country, then everything would stop – that includes NATO and therefore post-second world war security.”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk echoed this sentiment, cautioning against “a political disaster”.
He said: “A conflict or attempted annexation of the territory of a Nato member by another Nato member would be the end of the world as we know it – and which for many years guaranteed our security.”
