Kyiv targeted in brutal Russian missile attack – with at least one killed | World | News
At least one person has died after a Russian missile attack on Kyiv triggered multiple fires across the city, Ukrainian officials have said.
Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said a nine-year-old child is among three people injured in the airstrikes.
He added that emergency services were called to at least four districts of the Ukrainian capital.
Kyiv’s military administration confirmed that fires broke out in several residential and non-residential buildings as a result of the strikes.
The State Emergency Service (SES) of Ukraine said on Telegram that the fatality occurred in the Obolonsky district, where another person was injured and two office buildings were destroyed – one of which caught fire.
The SES also reported a fire on the roof of a multi-storey building in Sviatoshynskyi, while a two-storey warehouse in the Holosiivskyi district was set ablaze by the attack.
More than 80 rescuers are working at the scene, the agency said.
Air raid sirens sounded at around 4.30am Ukraine time (2.30am GMT) as the strikes began. It was not immediately clear what type of missiles were used, but the late activation of alerts suggests they were difficult to detect by radar.
Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, said: “Russia carried out a missile strike on Kyiv and the Kyiv region.
“This is how (Russian President Vladimir Putin) wants the war to end.”
Hopes for renewed peace negotiations have been raised after former US President Donald Trump claimed he had been in contact with both Kyiv and Moscow.
However, many in Ukraine fear his return to power could see the US push for a settlement which favours Russia, given his past praise for Mr Putin and his repeated threats to cut military aid.
Mr Zelenskyy confirmed on Tuesday that Ukraine will soon hold talks with US officials.
