Leyton Orient star Jamie Donley scores from halfway line to shell-shock Man City in FA Cup | Football | Sport
Leyton Orient star Jamie Donley caught out Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega from just past the halfway line in a magical FA Cup moment on Saturday.
With their eye on a giant-killing and a spot in the last 16, Orient fans produced an electric atmosphere at the Gaughan Group Stadium for their fourth-round showdown with the reigning Premier League champions.
Their passionate support was rewarded by Orient giving as good as they got in the opening exchanges. And 20-year-old Donley, who is on loan from Tottenham, sent the stadium into raptures when he pounced on a loose ball in the 16th minute.
His effort from miles out looped over the scrambling Ortega, cannoned back off the bar and went in off the City stopper.
It therefore goes down as a Blues own goal but there is no doubt about who will be remembered for it, with Donley’s audacious strike catching City, Ortega and both sets of fans completely by surprise.
City eventually came back to win it through second-half goals from Abdukodir Khusanov and Kevin De Bruyne, but they were made to work extremely hard.
Donley is one of the highest-rated youngsters on Tottenham‘s books, and the north London club tied him down to a long-term contract before sending him on loan to the third tier for valuable first-team experience.
The versatile forward, who started behind the striker against City, has scored five league goals and laid on five assists this campaign. He spent some time on the fringes in October and November, but has since worked his way back into Richie Wellens’ starting XI and racked up a string of consecutive starts.
Orient gave the visitors a tough time on Saturday, with Ortega’s own goal sending them into the break one goal ahead. They booked their ticket to the fourth round the hard way, requiring penalties to get past Boreham Wood in the first round and Derby County in the third, with a 2-1 victory over Oldham Athletic sandwiched between.
Leading up to the clash with City, Orient boss Wellens was full of praise for his opposite number, Pep Guardiola. “I think Jurgen Klopp is an incredible manager,” the 44-year-old told BBC Radio London.
“And he would have won a lot of Premier Leagues if it wasn’t for Pep – he won one. So yeah, for me, in this era Pep’s by far the best in English football, probably the world.”
