Little-known dishwasher function helps you clean wine glasses with ease

Not everyone has a dishwasher in their home, but for those that do, they can feel like real life-savers. Although it’s only estimated around a third of UK households own one, they can save water and evergy and also free up time compared to washing up by hand.

That being said, although they are incredibly practical, as you can just stack your dishes and cutlery in it, press a button and leave it to do its thing, eventually you’ll encounter something that just doesn’t fit. And any wine fans will know that these glasses, even when they are dishwasher safe, just aren’t practical when it comes to stacking.

But it turns out you don’t have to wash them by hand, as your dishwasher may have a little-known function for making sure they fit, so they come out sparkling clean.

Trine Rødsgaard shared the tip with her followers on TikTok – and people were left amazed. In the caption of a recent clip, she wrote: “Do you recognise this problem? And then you end up washing your wine glasses by hand.” In the video, Trine could be seen putting a wine glass in the rack, but when she tried to close it, it wouldn’t. The stem of the wine glass is too long.

“So here’s a trick for the next time you need to clean your wine glasses,” she added, and showed how you can actually lift the rack down so that the wine glasses fit. Trine’s dish washer had two levels, so she could lift it up and down.

The upper rack is designed to hold more delicate and lighter dishware, like glasses, coffee cups and tea cups. Although whether or not the rack can be adjusted, and how, depends on the make of your dishwasher, it can sometimes be done by grabbing the handles located at the left and right sides of the rack. When you push these down, you can usually lift the rack up or down. There might be buttons to push, or like with Trine’s dishwasher, you might have to fully lift the rack out, and then slide it onto a new slot.

And many were blown away by the trick. “Wow, mind blown,” said one person. “Oh wow, thank you,” said anohter.” Others shared their worries that now plates wouldn’t fit underneath. However, one person shared that a lot of dishwashers have the function that you can adjust the height on one side only, so that you can fit plates and other tall items on the rack below still.

The hack was also discovered by Sophie Cosgrave while scrolling through TikTok, and shared it on with her own followers, going on to say her “whole life is a life”. With just the click of a button on each side, the shelf significantly lowered, leaving enough room for the stemmed glass to fit in.

Seeing the hack online, Sophie had to run to her own dishwasher to check whether she had the same function – and luckily she did. Blown away, she shared the hack with her followers, who were equally gobsmacked by the discovery.

One person joked: “OK so this one vid proves that the [more than] 1,000 hours I have so far spent here [on TikTok] was actually worth it.” Another added: “Game changer,” while a third commented: “I am so glad you posted this. I couldn’t figure it out before!”

It’s important to note that not all dishwashers have this handy feature. The best thing to do is to check your appliance’s user manual. You can usually find these online if you’ve thrown yours away.
