Liverpool news: Decision on Slot replacement as Klopp ‘in talks’ over return | Football | Sport
The setback of Arne Slot’s second campaign at Liverpool could prove crucial in determining his future at Anfield. A woeful defence of their Premier League title has seen the Reds appear a pale imitation of their previous standards throughout much of the season.
Currently sixth in the table after a record summer outlay of £450million, questions remain over whether the Reds’ significant underperformance might prompt a decision on Slot’s tenure. The Dutchman has more than 12 months remaining on the three-year deal he penned upon becoming Liverpool head coach in 2024. With over three months of the campaign still to play, it’s a spell that could shape Slot’s legacy as Express Sport examines the latest developments emerging from Anfield.
Arne Slot replacement verdict
With just over a year remaining on Slot’s Anfield contract, a judgment on whether to extend or sever ties with the Dutchman must be reached in the coming months. Before his arrival in 2024, former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso was understood to be Liverpool’s primary candidate to succeed Klopp, but he declined the opportunity to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.
Following just seven months at Real Madrid, the Spaniard left the club in January and has remained without a job, reportedly preferring to delay any decision on his next role until the summer. According to TEAMtalk, the Reds owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have identified Alonso as the “only name” they want as the club’s head coach this summer.
The report further suggests that the dramatic downturn from last season’s championship-winning run has raised concerns among the club’s leadership. It claims that whilst there are no current plans to replace Slot, the Dutchman is aware that an explanation for this season’s slump will be demanded at the end of the season.
Jurgen Klopp return to management
Despite showing no inclination to re-enter the daily grind of football management, Jurgen Klopp continues to be linked with a sensational switch to Atletico Madrid. Currently serving as the global head of football at the Red Bull franchise, reports of his contentment with his role, which were dismissed by Red Bull, sparked controversy.
Amid allegations of dissatisfaction, Spanish television programme El Chiringuito reported that the German is in advanced talks to take over from Diego Simeone, who is in the final year of his contract. They claim that Klopp, 58, is in discussions with Mark Rowan, the CEO of Apollo, the majority shareholder of Atletico.
Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of corporate projects and investments at Red Bull, emphatically refuted reports of Klopp’s dissatisfaction, stating: “This is total nonsense and completely unfounded. On the contrary, we are extremely satisfied with Jurgen Klopp’s work. We are convinced that he is the right man for this job. That’s where we are putting our full focus and our energy.”
