Liverpool ‘open’ to Mo Salah sale and star could get Nunez reunion | Football | Sport
Liverpool are open-minded about selling Mohamed Salah and there is a possibility the Egyptian could be reunited with Darwin Nunez at Al-Hilal. That’s according to reports in the wake of Salah’s explosive interview from the mixed zone at Elland Road after Liverpool drew 3-3 with Leeds United in the Premier League. Salah was an unused substitute for the second time in the Reds’ last three matches.
And Salah caused tremors across the league by indicating he will leave in the January transfer window if Arne Slot remains the manager. The 33-year-old declared he feels he’s been “thrown under the bus” by Slot and the club and says his relationship with the under-fire manager is broken.
BBC Sport report that those with knowledge of the situation believe Salah wasn’t exaggerating and the relationship between the two is genuinely broken. It is added that right now, with Slot still in charge, Salah sees no future at Anfield.
And Liverpool are said to be open to all possibilities as the January window nears. Simone Inzaghi’s Al-Hilal are one club interested from the Saudi Pro League but no serious discussions have been held at present because Salah has the African Cup of Nations with Egypt to worry about first. He leaves for the mid-season tournament following next Saturday’s clash with Brighton at Anfield.
But Saudi league leaders Al-Hilal have already signed Nunez from Liverpool for a fixed fee of £46million in the summer. That amount could yet rise to £66m. It is unclear how much the Merseyside club would charge for £400,000-a-week Salah but their position may have been weakened by how explosive his interview was, making it clear he’s leaning towards an exit.
Salah said: “This club, I will always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much and I always will. It [the situation] is not acceptable to me, to be fair. I don’t get it.
“I don’t think I’m the problem. I have done so much for this club. I said to [my family], come to the Brighton game. I don’t know if I am going to play or not but I am going to enjoy it. In my head, I’m going to enjoy that game because I don’t know what is going to happen now.
“I will be in Anfield to say goodbye to the fans and go the Africa Cup of Nations. I don’t know what is going to happen when I am there.”
Asked if a Saudi transfer is possible in the winter window, Salah replied: “I don’t want to answer this question, because the club is going to take me to a different direction.
“I cannot say it is impossible [to fix the situation], but from what I feel, I have done so much for the club, I love the fans and the club so much, but I don’t know what is going to happen next.”
Slot will be grilled about the situation when he sits in front of journalists for a press conference on Monday. Liverpool face Inter Milan at the San Siro in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with serious doubts over whether Salah will even travel with his team-mates to Italy for a match the Reds could sorely do with winning.
