Arne Slot has finally beaten Nottingham Forest for the first time after Liverpool struck seven minutes into stoppage time to steal a huge away win. Minutes after Alexis Mac Allister saw a goal disallowed by VAR, the Argentine side-footed in from inside the six-yard box to secure a vital three points for Liverpool’s top-four hopes at the death.
The Reds looked set to be frustrated by Forest for a fourth time under Slot before their late, late winner at the City Ground. The visitors were dreadful in the first half, and despite improving after the break, failed to trouble Stefan Ortega’s goal much until the final minutes. In a chaotic finish, Mac Allister saw one ruled out before his second stood after a narrow offside call. Victory means Liverpool join Chelsea on 45 points in the race for Champions League qualification. Express Sport rates and slates Slot’s players after a dramatic game…
Liverpool player ratings vs Nottingham Forest
Alisson – 5
Great early save from Callum Hudson-Odoi and some solid shot-stopping but also moments of really poor distribution. Got lost under Neco Williams’ late cross, which threatened to cost Liverpool before Morgan Gibbs-White’s shot was blocked.
Moved into midfield 30 minutes in after struggling at right-back. Clever pass into Salah before the Egyptian squandered the chance to cross. Not as impactful as normal from midfield. That said, he showed good patience in possession before delivering the cross that led to the winner.
Liverpool’s most physically imposing player and consistently strong in the air. A one-man wall in defence at times. Only downside was that he gave away some daft fouls second half.
A sloppy start until he took a shot flush in the face, then made a crucial touch to prevent Igor Jesus from going one-on-one. Some important contributions in the air but guilty of giving away the ball a few times. Gets the assist for Mac Allister’s goal.
A solid display and plenty of dogged defending against Omari Hutchinson. One of Liverpool’s better players after man of the match Konate, but still, there were some moments when he needed to be braver with the ball.
Careless with the ball on too many occasions and desperately struggled in the midfield battle. A really poor showing from the Dutchman.

Consistently beaten in his duels and too easily ran past by Forest midfielders. Not good enough on the ball either. But then popped up with Liverpool’s winner at the death moments after being denied.
Overhit a cross from a great opportunity in the first half and just far too wasteful with the ball when he had it. Could have had an assist when Curtis Jones was denied but overall got no joy out of Neco Williams. Had absolutely no right to wear such a wry smile on his way off the pitch and on the subs bench.
Drafted in last minute for Wirtz. Caught on the ball for an early Hudson-Odoi chance and struggled physically throughout, giving the ball away too easily too many times. Denied a goal by Stefan Ortega at close range second half but would have only papered over the cracks of a poor performance.
Better than his fellow starting attackers, albeit still not great. A good cross into Salah at the back post before Jones’ shot was saved. Outside of that, didn’t do enough.
Virtually anonymous in the first half but wasted one good chance to attack when Forest passed it straight to him. Quiet in the second half too until he should have been the one to score Liverpool’s winner at the death, but the Frenchman headed straight at the keeper from close range.
Rio Ngumoha (Salah 77) – 7
Ekitike should have scored from his excellent cross but he was a real threat on the ball. Much better than both Salah and Gakpo despite such a short cameo. Deserves more minutes.
Federico Chiesa (Gakpo 77) – N/A
Andy Robertson (Kerkez 83) – N/A
A vital block on Gibbs-White’s late shot.
Joe Gomez (Jones 83) – N/A
Another cameo off the bench.
