Liverpool send message to Trent Alexander-Arnold and spark furious reaction | Football | Sport
Liverpool have risked the wrath of their supporters after posting a message on their social media pages to former player Trent Alexander-Arnold. The local lad left Liverpool under controversial circumstances earlier this year, having opted to leave the club and join Real Madrid instead.
It had looked as if Alexander-Arnold would leave on a free contract at the end of his contract, however, the summer Club World Cup gave Liverpool the opportunity to land a small fee for their academy product’s services. Los Blancos paid around £10million to get the deal done early, with Alexander-Arnold featuring for Xabi Alonso’s side at the Stateside tournament.
Even though a nominal fee was acquired, it didn’t stop the relationship between Alexander-Arnold and some of the Liverpool faithful from souring. So much so, legendary boss Jurgen Klopp even came out and urged the Liverpool fans not to hold any ill feelings towards the right-back upon his exit from Anfield.
However, months on from his eventual exit, Liverpool stoked the flames once again by wishing Alexander-Arnold a happy birthday on their social media accounts. While it’s a common practice for all current stars and most notable former players, it hasn’t stopped some fans from complaining about the move.
One took to X to say: “Lads we’ve just lost 3 on the bounce, could you not?”
Another, tongue firmly in cheek, added: “Make that 4 losses in a row.”
Whereas another said: “This tweet is worse than those three straight defeats which we suffered last week.”
It wasn’t all doom and gloom though, with some Liverpool supporters joining in with the well wishes. One fan posted: “Happy birthday lad, we weren’t angry at you personally we were angry because we knew how much we’d miss you.”
Recent results and performances would suggest Alexander-Arnold is being missed by the current Liverpool team, but the England international has suffered frustrations of his own since securing a move to Spain. He was forced off with a hamstring injury just five minutes into his Champions League debut for the 15-time champions, casting doubt over what would be an Anfield return later on in the season.
Liverpool were drawn at home to Real Madrid in the league phase of the competition, with Alexander-Arnold still sidelined by the problem. Reports have suggested that he should return to the fold in the coming weeks, but he faces a race against time to play at Anfield.
