Luke Humphries has two superstitions he does before every darts match | Other | Sport

Luke Humphries has revealed the two superstitions he performs as part of his pre-match routine. The darts star insists he would lose if he did not perform at least one of the activities.

Humphries has revealed that he will always touch the floor before throwing his practice darts. Another superstition involves kissing his hand and pointing to the sky before each of his matches.

The latter comes after he won a development tournament around the time his uncle died.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Humphries said: “I have a few little superstitions that I do. I have to touch the floor before I have my practice darts. I don’t know why, it’s just something that came in [to my routine].

“There was a development tour that I needed to win just after my uncle passed and I did this (he gestures a kiss on his hand and points to the sky), and I did win. Now I’ve got to do that every time I play darts because it’s a superstition that if I don’t do it, I’ll lose.”

Humphries’ superstitions worked on the first night of Premier League darts last week. He thumped Chris Dobey 6-1 in the final after overcoming Nathan Aspinall and Michael van Gerwen.

But a bizarre injury hampered his performance on night two. Humphries revealed that he cut his finger on a practice board and he was seen frequently glancing at his hand. That potentially provided a distraction.

Responding to a fan on X, Humphries admitted: “[I] pulled my darts out the practice board and cut it on the wires then it just wouldn’t stop bleeding.”

His 6-5 defeat in the final against Littler was marred by whistling and boos from the crowd inside Glasgow’s OVO Hydro. Littler was angered by the disruption and said it got worse after Kirk Bevins told the rowdy fans to stop.

“Yeah, obviously, there was a few in particular that were [whistling] when Luke was throwing,” Littler said after his victory.

“Kirk told them to be quiet and it got even worse, and then I missed doubles and Luke breaks at 5-4. I’m just like, ‘Kirk, you’ve made it worse for me there, I’m 5-4 down.’ But I broke back and held my throw very strongly again.”

The Premier League heads to Dublin next week. Humphries faces Stephen Bunting in the first round.
