Majorca protesters told ‘nothing will break Brits’ love affair’ | World | News
Over the past year Spain has erupted with a series of protests driven by soaring tourist numbers which residents say is putting a strain on their daily lives. However, demonstrators who would have hoped to deter holidaymakers have been left red-faced as Brits delcare “nothing is going our love affair” with Majorca.
Not even anti-tourism marches, sweeping regulations and increased hostility can stop Brits from holidays in one of their favourite holiday destinations with Majorca seeing an increased number of UK visitors in May. However, visitors from Germany and mainland Spain appear to have been scared off with numbers falling. British tourism was up by 6% in May 2025 in the Balearics and 9% in Majorca, taking the number up to 310,000.
Seemingly taking their business elsewhere 2.3% less Germans visited Majorca in May of this year whilst Spanish mainland visitors to the Balearics plunged by 10.7% to 276,000 and by almost 4% in Majorca.
Calling Brits Majorca’s most “loyal holidaymaker” one hotelier says it will take a lot more to deter UK visitors from jetting off to the island
The hotelier said: “The British have been coming on holiday here for decades, in fact they are our most loyal holidaymaker.
“Nothing is going to break their love affair with Mallorca.”
However, protesters can heave a sigh of relief as despite the increase in Brits tourism to Majorca fell slightly in May, the first drop in tourism to the island since the end of the pandemic.
Earlier this year a veteran Majorcan tourist issued a damning warning to the island to not “bite the hand that feeds you” in a furious open letter.
The Brit who has been holidaying on the island twice a year for the past 30 years accused Majorca of behaving ungratefully towards tourists who have pumped money into the islands “tourism, infrastructure, government, hoteliers pockets etc for the best part of 40 years”
In a letter sent to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, Edward Fox, said: “So go ahead Majorca, bite the hand that has came to this island put so much money into your tourism, infrastructure, government, hoteliers pockets etc etc for the best part of 40 years, us tourists Do Bite Back, and me personally and many hundreds of thousands of tourists have bitten back”, said Mr Fox.
