Man Utd chiefs set to clash after disagreement on Amorim replacement | Football | Sport
Manchester United’s top brass are divided over the selection of their next manager, with owners the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe spearheading the hunt for a new boss following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal. The decision-makers at Old Trafford are torn between making an immediate appointment or holding off until the summer.
Potential candidates include Oliver Glasner, Enzo Maresca, Lauren Blanc, Xavi, Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane. Darren Fletcher has stepped in as caretaker manager and may oversee United’s upcoming two matches while the club’s hierarchy deliberates.
The Red Devils’ primary objective this season is to secure a top-four finish and Champions League qualification, a task deemed too ambitious for Fletcher. United could potentially secure Glasner’s services in the coming weeks, subject to negotiations with Crystal Palace.
Despite his commendable performance at Palace, there are concerns about Glasner’s lack of experience managing a club of United’s stature. Pochettino and even Thomas Tuchel are also being considered, but this would require the Old Trafford chiefs to wait until after the World Cup to attempt to entice either manager to United.
Pochettino will be at the helm for the host nation, USA, in the finals, while Tuchel will spearhead England’s campaign. However, if United choose to delay their decision, there are concerns about potential further damage before the season concludes.
United can hardly afford another season without European football. The bare minimum expectation for whoever takes the reins is a top-six finish.
Amorim was dismissed after a 14-month tenure, following his outburst after United’s 1-1 draw at Elland Road. However, it’s believed that Ratcliffe and his team had already decided to sack Amorim prior to the Leeds match, having lost confidence in the Portuguese manager.
His departure marks yet another disgraceful episode in the turbulent reign of Ratcliffe and INEOS. Amorim leaves with United sitting sixth in the table, following just one victory in their last five matches.
