Man Utd could get a bargain as INEOS eye exciting Premier League midfielder | Football | Sport
Manchester United are keeping tabs on Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as they prepare a significant midfield restructure ahead of the summer transfer window. Gomes, 25, is expected to depart Molineux this summer, with Wolves facing relegation to the Championship, and his recent performances in the engine room have attracted considerable attention.
The Brazilian has proved vital to some enhanced showings from Rob Edwards’ side, who have defeated both Aston Villa and Liverpool recently, with Gomes excelling in both fixtures and scoring against Villa. United are among several Premier League clubs to have monitored Gomes this season, with interest from some of the division’s top clubs intensifying again in recent weeks.
Gomes arrived at Wolves from Flamengo in the summer of 2023 for a fee of around £16million and has subsequently established himself in the Brazil squad through his Premier League performances.
He penned a new contract at Wolves last April, but with the club appearing almost certain to exit the Premier League this season, he will be available for transfer during the summer window.
United are pursuing two midfielders, with Casemiro departing upon his contract’s expiry, whilst Manuel Ugarte is expected to be offloaded following his underwhelming spell since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain.
Under INEOS, they have prioritised Premier League experience and considered numerous candidates throughout this campaign. Elliot Anderson features prominently on their summer shortlist, though the 23-year-old is equally coveted by Manchester City.
United maintain their interest in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, despite his performances declining this season after his proposed Old Trafford transfer collapsed last summer, whilst Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton represents another player United have scouted, alongside Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.
Newcastle‘s disappointing campaign and their probable exclusion from next season’s Champions League have alerted United to the potential availability of their midfielders, with 25-year-old Sandro Tonali expected to seek a St James’ Park departure in the summer.
United are amongst several clubs monitoring Tonali, whilst they have additionally been associated with a move for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes. Real Madrid are also understood to be pursuing the 28-year-old Brazil international.
