Man Utd could make two appointments after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talks | Football | Sport

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick could work together as potential successors to Ruben Amorim at Manchester United. The Portuguese manager was dismissed on Monday, with the club stating that the decision was made to maximise their chances of a high Premier League finish.

Both Carrick and Solskjaer have been in informal discussions with the board this week about taking over the reins at Old Trafford. Contrary to expectations of a single interim appointment, Sky Sports News suggests that the pair could jointly manage the team until a permanent replacement is found in the summer. A player also reportedly told BBC Sport that the role could be shared by multiple candidates.

Carrick was a key part of Solskjaer’s coaching staff when the latter took charge at United in 2018 following Jose Mourinho’s departure.

Further talks with Solskjaer and Carrick are expected in the coming days before a final decision is made. In the meantime, Darren Fletcher will lead the team for their upcoming Premier League match against Burnley.

The former United star expressed his honour at being given the opportunity.

He revealed during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday: “Surreal. It is an amazing honour to lead a Manchester United team especially as it was not in my wildest dreams that would be something which could potentially happen.

“To lead out the team is an amazing honour and something I am really proud to do but not in the circumstances I expected it to happen so that is something which doesn’t sit quite easy with me.

“But, I have just got to think I have a job to do and I just have to lead the team tomorrow and think of the great honour and pride in doing that.”

Reports indicate that Fletcher might be handed the head coaching position through to the end of the season, depending on his performance against Burnley.

As for Solskjaer, the Norwegian could return to the dugout after a short seven-month tenure with Turkish outfit Besiktas, whilst also serving as a UEFA match analyst during his hiatus.

Meanwhile, Carrick embarked on his managerial journey in 2022 when he accepted the head coach position at Championship club Middlesbrough, having previously overseen affairs on a temporary basis after Solskjaer’s departure in 2021.

Carrick failed to guide the Teesside outfit to Premier League promotion and subsequently lost his position in the summer of 2025.

Should both bosses make their way back to Old Trafford, questions remain over whether such a reunion would prove successful, with the crucial issue being which individual would serve as the primary authority within the squad.
