Manchester United will need to find the right solution to solve an unexpected dilemma ahead of next season. It will be a summer of change at Old Trafford, with club chiefs needing to appoint a permanent manager to lead them forward. Michael Carrick will be hoping to earn the job on a full-time basis, but those in power may decide to appoiet a bigger name with more top-level experience.

It’s one of several big decisions the Red Devils will have to make between now and the start of the 2026/27 campaign. They will also need to figure out how to replace Casemiro, who will wave goodbye to United when his contract expires in the summer. He’s endured mixed fortunes since joining the club from Real Madrid in 2022, but it’s clear that he will be sorely missed.

The veteran midfielder initially struggled to hit the ground running, leading Jamie Carragher to infamously state ‘the football has left him’ after a disasterclass against Crystal Palace in 2024.

This season, however, Casemiro has defied expectations to become a vital cog in United’s midfield machine. He has been equally important in attack and defence, expertly screening the back four while chipping in with crucial goals at the other end of the pitch.

Casemiro would have easily picked up the player of the match award if Bruno Fernandes hadn’t produced a world-class display in the second half.

His impressive performance showed that, in spite of Carragher’s claims, the football hasn’t left him and he remains more than capable of stepping up under pressure to deliver for the Red Devils.

United fans were heard chanting ‘one more year’ on Sunday but sadly, that won’t be the case. A decision on Casemiro’s future has already been made and it will be up to club bosses to replace him before the start of next season.

It’s a decision they must get right to avoid leaving a huge hole in the engine room. United need a player with a similar profile, a deep-lying midfielder with the ability to score goals and produce all-around displays to inspire crucial victories.

Those players are few and far between, especially those with the ability the Red Devils need if they are serious about returning to Premier League title contention in the near future.

They might be forced to think outside the box to solve this particular problem. Long-term target Carlos Baleba rarely appears on the scoresheet, while the likes of Joao Gomes and Sandro Tonali only have one goal between them in the Premier League this season.

Elliot Anderson would probably be the best fit out of the names United have already been linked with, but he only fares marginally better than Baleba, Gomes and Tonali with just two goals to his name in 2025/26.

A positive spin would suggest that United have plenty of time to replace Casemiro before next season gets underway, but it’s an issue that can’t be taken lightly if they want to maintain their recent revival for the foreseeable future.
