Man Utd line up Mac Allister transfer bid as Liverpool star may leave | Football | Sport

Manchester United are considering a surprising swoop on fierce rivals Liverpool for Alexis Mac Allister. United are currently compiling a shortlist of prospective midfield additions that the club will look to secure during the summer transfer window. And it’s understood Old Trafford chiefs are closely monitoring the situation surrounding World Cup winner Mac Allister.

Rumours are gathering pace that the Argentine star could depart Liverpool this summer. The 27-year-old is contracted at Anfield until 2028, but has experienced a challenging season, which has seen him fail to replicate his finest performances. United have registered interest in Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson.

Tempting Mac Allister away from Anfield to Old Trafford would represent a monumental challenge for United, given the intense rivalry between the two sides.

There are multiple instances of players having represented both clubs during their careers, including Michael Owen and Paul Ince.

But since Phil Chisnall’s 1964 switch from United to Liverpool, no player has transferred directly between the two clubs.

Whether Mac Allister would be prepared to leave Liverpool remains uncertain, though he has previously indicated an ambition to play in Spain at some point in his career.

Whilst United recognise they would stand no realistic prospect of attracting someone of Mac Allister’s calibre without securing Champions League qualification this season.

Yet despite the considerable obstacles facing United in their pursuit of Mac Allister, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is determined to keep all of his options open to the idea, they would be keen on securing his signature should he become available.

Mac Allister made the move to Liverpool from Brighton in a £55million deal in 2023 and played a pivotal role in their Premier League title triumph last season.

Recognised as one of the globe’s top midfielders, Mac Allister was instrumental in Argentina’s World Cup victory in Qatar in 2022, following their exhilarating final win over France.
