Man Utd news: Lisandro Martinez bites back at Carragher in TV interview | Football | Sport

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez exacted his revenge on Jamie Carragher after speaking to the Liverpool icon following their 1-0 win over Fulham.

The Argentinian defender kept a clean sheet at the back and bounced back from a scary moment in the second half to lead his side home to an important victory.

Having agreed to a live interview on Sky Sports after the game, the 26-year-old clearly hadn’t forgotten Carragher’s comments where he questioned the defender’s ability to be a success in the Premier League due to his physical attributes.

At one stage, Carragher even ran around to the other side of the TV desk and stood side to side with Martinez, which showed only a small margin between the two men in terms of height.

Gary Neville asked Martinez what he felt about criticism about his height, to which the £57million defender interjected and said: “You mean [from] him?” prompting laughter from Sky’s pundits, including Carragher.

Martinez went on to answer the question from Neville and admitted that the players deserved criticism, although he insisted that he is not fazed by questions about his stature.

“As a player we are ready for everything, it is part of our job,” Martinez said on Sky Sports after the game.

“If you play bad you have to be ready to be criticised, the first two games [last season] I didn’t play well and I take that responsibility.

Addressing the issue of his height, he replied: “I always believe in myself and I know that I am not really tall but I will win.”

Both Neville and Carragher praised the defender for speaking to them, describing their chat as a “brilliant interview”. It comes after Carragher issued an apology to Martinez in May 2023 after his debut season in the Premier League.

“He is a warrior, he’s a leader and when you think of that spine of the team, certainly him and Casemiro, two new signings I think have made a huge difference,” Carragher said.

“So apologies Lisandro and all Man United fans, if you can please stop tweeting me about Lisandro Martinez now please!

Martinez also had a fiery message for Adama Traore after a robust challenge on the Fulham winger sent the Spaniard flying, shortly after his poorly-timed tackle put Fulham through on goal.

Traore is renowned as one of the most physically-gifted players in the top flight and Martinez, clearly fired up after the win, appeared to enjoy taking out his opponent.

When asked about his battle with Traore, Martinez said: “I sent him to the gym! He is difficult to play against and I learned from the first situation, in the first situation he killed me but then I killed him back.”
