Manchester United stunned Premier League leaders Arsenal to make it two wins from two under Michael Carrick with a 3-2 victory that moves them up to fourth. United came from behind to lead at the Emirates and then, after conceding an equaliser late on, substitute Matheus Cunha smashed in a brilliant 87th-minute winner to grab a massive three points. After last weekend’s win over rivals Manchester City, beating Arsenal moves United above Chelsea and Liverpool in the table.

Arsenal took the lead on the half-hour mark after Martin Odegaard’s effort went in off Lisandro Martinez, but Mbeumo soon equalised for the Red Devils courtesy of a dreadful Martin Zubimendi mistake. United stole in front shortly after the restart when Dorgu scored a goal of the season contender from the edge of the box but Merino levelled in the 84th minute. The game wasn’t level for long as Cunha scored the winning goal three minutes later. United are the first team this season to go behind but still beat the Gunners and the first team to score three in a single game against the north Londoners since Luton Town in December 2023. Man Utd player ratings vs Arsenal

Senne Lammens – 6

Saved well from Zubimendi’s first-half header and faultless for the own goal. Alert to tip Bukayo Saka‘s shot wide late on. Had done well with crosses and set-pieces until getting lost for Merino’s goal, which he gets marked down for. Well off his line late on to thwart Viktor Gyokeres.

Didn’t see much of the ball throughout but battled well against Leandro Trossard who had very little say in the game.

A really solid showing, helping repel loads of Arsenal attacks. Had a penalty scare second half when the ball struck his hand but a spot-kick rightly not given.

Good block on a Rice shot early on but Odegaard’s shot went in off him after he completely missed the ball with his left foot. Found himself outmuscled a few times but helped see out victory with a brilliant late tackle to deny Noni Madueke in stoppage time.

Frustrated Saka well with a disciplined display. Helped blunt substitute Madueke as well.

Some good contributions defensively, especially at set-pieces, on his first appearance since his summer exit was confirmed.

Not his precise best but still influential. Set Mbeumo away on the counter-attack with a good pass but struck a wild shot wide from the same move. Fired wide again after William Saliba’s crucial intervention stopped him scoring. Teed up Dorgu for his screamer after excellent combination play.

Didn’t misplace a pass first half and mostly kept it tidy second half too. The United midfield looks far better with him in it. Gets the assist for Cunha’s winner.

Wasted one counter-attack chance with a poor pass but worked really hard defensively, especially when United were leading.

A different player. Should have dealt better with the cross before Arsenal’s opening goal, with his header keeping the ball in play. But made amends by being a real menace in the final third. The highlight of course was his incredible half-volley to put United in front after great close link-up with Fernandes. Went off injured, unfortunately.

Had a good chance to immediately equalise but opted against shooting. Then capitalised ruthlessly from Zubimendi’s error by coolly rounding Raya. Back-to-back big-game goals from the Cameroonian who is up to nine for the season. Put in a shift out of possession too.

Substitutes

Matheus Cunha (Mbeumo 69) – 8

Thrashed in a stunning curled finish to win it late on for United. Raya had no chance.

Benjamin Sesko (Dorgu 81) – N/A

Couldn’t scramble clear Merino’s equaliser.

Noussair Mazraoui (Amad 88) – N/A

Came on to help United see it out.
