Man Utd release cold statement as Marseille confirm £27m Mason Greenwood transfer | Football | Sport
Manchester United have confirmed Mason Greenwood has completed a permanent transfer to Marseille for a reported £27million fee and a 50 per cent sell-on clause. Greenwood had played for United since the age of six, but the club released a brief statement, just 57 words long, to announce his departure.
The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Getafe, registering 10 goals and six assists in 36 appearances in all competitions.
He returned to Carrington for a short but productive transfer meeting with United’s new football hierarchy at the start of pre-season last week before leaving the training complex for the final time.
Greenwood’s performances for Getafe reportedly attracted heavyweight interest, but Marseille and Lazio emerged as his strongest suitors in recent weeks.
And he has decided to complete a move to Ligue 1, permanently resuming his career away from Old Trafford after his temporary stint in Spain.
A United statement read: “Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer.
“The 22 year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019.
“We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”
After flying through the ranks as one of the club’s most promising young talents, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer handed him his debut in March 2019.
Across his three-year senior United career, Greenwood scored 35 goals and provided 12 assists in 129 appearances, and inherited the iconic No. 11 shirt.
But his career stalled in January 2022 when he was arrested and later charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Greenwood denied all the charges, and in February 2023, they were dropped by the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service due to the “withdrawal of key witnesses” and “new evidence” that had come to light.
