Man Utd submit surprise loan bid for Premier League goalkeeper | Football | Sport

But according to the Daily Mail, Villa have rebuffed United’s advances and told the Red Devils to look elsewhere. The idea of a loan to another Premier League side was met with incredulity at Villa Park.

Martinez, 32, has already turned down the chance to sign for a team in the Saudi Pro League. Villa are thought to require sales in order to bring in more players for Unai Emery, with the goalkeeper seen as a potential outgoing due to his age and interest from high-profile clubs.

Villa value Martinez in the region of £40million and feel that they would gain little by letting him leave on a short-term basis. It remains to be seen if United will meet such an asking price, especially with Onana still at the club.

Martinez signed a new contract at the Midlands club until 2029, but was visibly emotional on what could be his final appearances for the club, the last of which came at Old Trafford when he was sent off on the final day of the season. Villa went on to miss out on a spot in the Champions League that day.

After that 2-0 defeat at United, Emery was quizzed on Martinez’s future, to which he replied: “I don’t know. He has a contract with us. We are very happy and we will see how the summer goes.”

When asked if discussions over Martinez leaving had taken place already, Emery added: “I don’t know. You can ask him.”

United are also considering a move for Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammers, who would command a fee less than the £40m quoted by Villa for Martinez.

Onana, meanwhile, is intent on staying in Manchester and proving his worth to Ruben Amorim. He has been an inconsistent performer since his arrival from Inter Milan and backup Altay Bayindir is also expected to depart.

“We are going to make that evaluation for any position in the squad,” Amorim said at the end of the season. “We need to improve. We cannot change all the players.

“We need to improve every position on the field. Goalkeeper is the same; we can work with Andre. Andre Onana already proved he is a top player with Inter. We have some seasons where we are [all] underperforming.”
