Man Utd want Enrique as INEOS shortlist of Carrick successors emerges | Football | Sport
Manchester United have identified Luis Enrique as a key candidate in their hunt for a permanent manager. The Red Devils are set to appoint Michael Carrick as the interim boss until the end of the season, with a full-time appointment expected in the summer. Other names on the shortlist include Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Carlo Ancelotti.
Enrique has now emerged as a potential choice for the Red Devils. The club’s owners are keen to bring in someone who can handle the immense pressure and expectations that come with the role. Enrique boasts an impressive managerial CV, having led Spain, Barcelona and currently Paris Saint-Germain.
The 55-year-old Spaniard clinched nine major trophies with Barcelona, including the Champions League in 2015. He has since added another ten trophies to his collection at PSG, including a second Champions League title.
His PSG side dominated Europe last season, crushing Inter Milan 5-0 in the final after knocking out Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal on the way to Munich.
Enrique, whose winning pedigree aligns with what United are seeking in their next manager, will be entering the final year of his contract with PSG in June and has yet to agree on a new deal. If this remains the case by summer, United would not have to pay a hefty compensation fee to PSG.
Despite speculation about his departure from the French giants, Enrique has denied these rumours and could still sign a new contract.
It remains uncertain whether United can entice Enrique to Old Trafford, given the current state of the club and the magnitude of the challenges that lie ahead.
