Hardman US secretary Marco Rubio has revealed he uses a cunning plan to hide from Donald Trump when they are both on board the presidential plane Air Force One. Mr Rubio is the US Secretary of State, the equivalent role of Britain’s Foreign Secretary, and often takes long-haul flights with Trump to distant countries.
Trump, aged 79, is well known to claim he doesn’t need much sleep and according to 54-year-old Mr Rubio the president likes to prowl his personal aircraft searching for anyone who might be awake.
In an interview with New York magazine Mr Rubio said he pretends to be a lower ranking “staffer” and hides himself in a special way to make it look like he’s taking a nap.
He told the publication’s Ben Terris that Air Force One has an office with “two couches” and that what he likes to do is “cocoon myself” so he “looks like a mummy”.
Mr Rubio added that the reasons behind his swaddled sleeping arrangements was because “I know that at some point on the flight, he’s (Trump) going to emerge from the cabin and start prowling the hallways to see who is awake”.
He added: “I want him to think it’s a staffer who fell asleep. I don’t want him to see his secretary of State sleeping on a couch and think, ‘Oh, this guy is weak.’”
Trump is approaching his 80th birthday on June 14 and recently addressed allegations he was seen himself to snooze during a Cabinet meeting. Trump famously used to call his predecessor President Joe Biden, now aged 83, “Sleepy Joe Biden” because of rumours his age was catching up to him.
Speaking to reporters at the latest Cabinet meeting on Thursday, Trump tackled reports and photos which appeared to show him with his eyes closed at the previous gathering.
He added: “We’re not going to go through the whole table because the last time we had a press conference, it lasted for three hours, and some people said, ‘He closed his eyes’.
“Look, it got pretty boring… I didn’t sleep, I just closed them because I wanted to get the hell out of here.”
