Mason Greenwood lined up for double Man Utd reunion amid £53m demand | Football | Sport
Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is once again on Napoli’s radar, potentially setting up a double reunion at the Italian club. Greenwood, who left Old Trafford in 2023 following a six-month investigation, has been plying his trade at Marseille since then.
Since moving to France, the 24-year-old has made a significant impact at Marseille, making 54 appearances so far. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Calcio Mercato reporting that Napoli are among several clubs showing interest. However, prising him away from Marseille won’t be cheap, with the French club reportedly valuing him at over €60million (£53m). Antonio Conte’s Napoli had previously attempted to sign Greenwood before his move to Marseille but were unsuccessful, according to The Athletic.
Whether Napoli will reignite their pursuit remains to be seen. However, if a move does materialise, Greenwood could find himself playing alongside former teammates Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund. The latter is currently enjoying a season-long loan at Napoli, with a clause included in the deal that will see him make a permanent £38m move if Napoli secure a Champions League spot.
Both players have made their mark in Italy, with McTominay becoming a key figure in midfield. He was even crowned Player of the 2024/25 season. As for Greenwood, he’s become an integral part of Roberto de Zerbi’s squad at the Orange Velodrome, making any potential January transfer a tricky proposition.
“He has the qualities to become one of the best players in the world,” the Italian coach said. “He’s incredibly talented, but he still needs to be even more useful for the team.
“I want to protect him because I don’t like seeing him criticised – he’s scored a lot of goals, he’s never missed training, and he still has room to grow.” Greenwood made the switch from United to Marseille in a deal worth up to €31.6million (£28m).
