‘Masterpiece’ war film is leaving Netflix in matter of days | Films | Entertainment

Netflix viewers and fans of war dramas are being urged to watch a critically acclaimed film which is leaving the streaming platform in a matter of days. The film, which is just one of many masterpiece war dramas on Netflix, boasts a star-studded cast including Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas.

The Netflix film received positive reviews from critics when it was first released and it earned various BAFTA, Golden Globe and Oscars. The film begins in May 1940, when Labour demanded the resignation of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain for failing to tackle the Nazi onslaught.

While many wanted Lord Halifax as his successor, he felt it was not the right time to step up. It was, in fact, Winston Churchill who had predicted the threat from Adolf Hitler before the war, but he did not have the best reputation in Parliament.

Still, Chamberlain chooses him as the leader of the national government and the film follows Churchill as he faces many challenges in the face of war. Gary Oldman stars as Churchill in Darkest Hour, with critics deeming Oldman’s performance one of the best of his career.

Darkest Hour leaves Netflix on January 15, so fans have only a couple of days left to watch the film before it disappears.

Viewers have taken to IMDb reviews to share their thoughts on the biographical war drama, with krossa-81279 hailing it “outstanding”, adding: “This movie is the best by far the best depiction of the great Winston Churchill. Gary Oldman is phenomenal. Shows the real struggle of the PM and how he rallied the people to help beat Nazi Germany.

“Even when pressured and he nearly gave in to his peers. Extraordinary movie.” Cflann1525 branded it “Gary Oldman’s role of a lifetime”, sharing: ” Not only is this an amazing movie from an entertainment standpoint, it is filled with some of the absolute best performances by a cast I have seen in a long time.”

Andymaranam called it a “masterpiece”, expanding: “A very rare film in this day and age, one that got Gary Oldman the recognition he deserves. No spoilers so simply… A masterpiece of a film from start to finish.”

Dbbl continued to praise the cast, sharing: “The story was captivating and had me on the edge of my seat even though I knew the outcome. I laughed and I cried but remained totally engrossed the whole way through. The actors were extraordinary as was everything about this movie.”

Anglaiseuroadress called the movie “one of the best films about WWII”, with many other fans in agreement. The film was written by The Theory of Everything screenwriter Anthony McCarten and it was directed by Joe Wright.

While Oldman was always slated to play Churchill, John Hurt was initially cast as Neville Chamberlain, but he dropped the role in pre-production as he was undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. He tragically died in January 2017, with Ronald Pickup assuming the role.

For his role as Churchill, Oldman spent more than 200 hours having make-up applied for his epic transformation, and reportedly smoked over 400 cigars during filming.

Oldman was praised for his performance, with critics placing him as a frontrunner to win an Oscar for Best Actor, which he did indeed go on to win.

Darkest Hour leaves Netflix on January 15.
