Directed by Elem Klimov, the film has been praised for its exceptional cinematography as it invites audiences to witness the devastating impact of war on humanity. Come and See is so popular, it has even been described as a real “masterpiece”.
The film was first released in 1985 and over the years, it has gained new fans who have come to appreciate the way the film does not glamourise war and violence. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has achieved an impressive 90% score with new audiences hooked on its harrowing plot.
Starring Aleksey Kravchenko, Olga Mironova and Liubomiras Laucevicius, you won’t forget about this film after you’ve watched it. Based on the novel “Ivan” by Ales Adamovich, it was made with a relatively low budget of $2.5 million (£1.8 million).
Ian Nathan, Empire Magazine wrote: “A relentless masterpiece, and a brilliant study of the cause and effect nature of brutality.”
On IMDb, one person said: “The best true-to-life war movie I have ever seen, and possibly the best movie I have ever seen. My eyes were opened when I saw this for the first time a few days ago. It made me realise what I miss 99% of the time when watching movies. So few affect me like this one did.”
Another person on IMDb penned: “This is one of the most realistic war films ever made, and it’s the more realistic for being shown and exposed from the point of view of a child, which enhances the impact and makes the realism with its constantly increasing chain reaction of shocks, more and more growing to unbearable self-tormenting horrors and abhorrence, the more almost unendurable, but you have to stay on and see it all through to the end.”
If you’re hoping to watch the film, you can find it on Amazon Prime.
