The umpire for the women’s singles final at the Miami Open was forced to step in multiple times as members of the crowd continued to shout out during rallies. Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka was dragged into a third set against Florida local Coco Gauff, and the fans inside the Hard Rock Stadium were engrossed by the close contest.
Many tried to spur Gauff, the home favourite, on. But a few got too excited. Chair umpire Tom Sweeney asked fans not to call out during points, but it didn’t stop. One called “out” during a point, and he joked that the tournament had “computers” to do that for them.
But he had to toughen up as the match went on and the screaming continued, warning that spectators could even be asked to leave if they interrupted. “Please, ladies and gentlemen, we’ve come this far,” he said as Gauff served at 2-4.
“Let’s let the players serve. Do not shout out during the serve. Please, if you want to stay, please stop shouting.”
A game earlier, Sweeney also had to scold someone who made a fake “out” call mid-rally. “We don’t need you to make calls, we have computers to do that,” the Australian umpire jibed.
He also gave Sabalenka a code violation for audible obscenity, and she responded with a wry smile. But she quickly moved on and barely lost a game afterwards. Having broken immediately to start the deciding set, the No. 1 seed broke again in the final game to claim a 6-2 4-6 6-3 victory, completing the Sunshine Double.

She referenced her audible obscenity during an immediate post-match interview with Sky Sports, hitting out at the loud fans. “I got a little frustrated at one moment, definitely not proud of what I yelled! But come on, you cannot do that,” Sabalenka said.
Giving her immediate thoughts on her win, the 27-year-old added: “I didn’t have a moment to stop and really look back and realise what happened in the last month. Oh my God, I am so proud of the work we have done. The fight that I was able to bring on court and the level and everything… Just wow.
“I know that she is a fighter, I know that she is going to fight for every opportunity. She played a great one, but I made a couple of unforced errors in the last game and I gave her a set but I was really mentally strong in my head I knew that I was doing everything right, it was just a matter of a few points. I was keeping telling myself ‘just stay focused, try to do better in the next time’ and that was the mentality going into the third set.”
And Sabalenka then publicly called out the fan in question during her victory speech. “I don’t know where you are… That lady that yelled, that hoped for the ‘out’. I shouldn’t be that rude, but come on, you cannot do that, you know? So let’s agree we were both wrong, so sorry,” she said while speaking to the fans inside the Hard Rock Stadium.
